Mojang has announced The Sift, a fourth Minecraft dimension joining the Overworld, the Nether and The End. It arrives on Java and Bedrock in 2027. It is, by all available screenshots, extremely pink.

Two outlets covered the same announcement and put different numbers in their headlines: PC Gamer said 15 years since the last new dimension, Eurogamer said 14. The End shipped in 2011, so the arithmetic depends on whether you’re counting to now or to launch. Either number is a long time to go without adding a place to go.

The 2027 part matters more than the pink part

Announcing a feature this far out is not normal for Minecraft. Mojang’s recent cadence has been drops: a mob, a block set, a biome refresh, shipped in chunks through the year and often previewed only weeks ahead. A dimension announced with a calendar year attached and nothing to play is a different kind of move. It’s Mojang asking for patience in advance.

I think that’s the honest read, and I think it’s the right call. A dimension is the largest structural thing you can add to Minecraft short of changing the physics. The End took years to feel finished after it landed, and it landed as a boss arena with a void around it. If The Sift ships thin, there’s no patching your way out of the disappointment, because the whole pitch is “somewhere new to live.” Better to take the runway.

But the runway sets a bar. Fifteen months of anticipation means players will arrive expecting a full ecology: mobs, ores, structures, a reason to build a base there rather than farm it and portal home. The Nether cleared that bar only after the 2020 update rebuilt it. The End still hasn’t, really.

Pink is a signal

Minecraft’s dimensions have used color as shorthand for danger. The Nether is red and hostile. The End is black and empty. Pink breaks that pattern, and it’s hard to read a hostile place in that palette. Whether The Sift is meant to be inviting, or unsettling in a way that plays against the color, is the most interesting unknown in the announcement.

There’s also a competitive problem Mojang has quietly created for itself. Custom dimensions have been a solved modding problem for years. Datapacks, Forge mods, entire server networks run on bespoke worlds with their own biomes and bosses. Anyone who wanted a fourth dimension has had several dozen. A first-party one in 2027 has to justify itself against work hobbyists already did for free.

What we know right now: a name, a color, two platforms, and a year. No mobs shown, no mechanics described, no explanation of how you get there.
